What does the HR 983 do?

HR 983 is a House bill sponsored by Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-WI-3). Extends the Department of Veterans Affairs' in-State tuition disapproval regime in section 3679(c) of title 38, United States Code, to cover educational assistance under chapter 1606 of title 10 (Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserves). It inserts ", or chapter 1606 of title 10," after existing chapter citations in paragraph (1) and paragraph (6), adds a new subparagraph (E) covering individuals entitled to assistance under section 16131 of title 10, and makes conforming changes to subsection (e). The amendments apply to an academic period that begins on or after August 1, 2026.
